'Enduring a Horrific Ordeal': Loved Ones of Unaccounted For Teenagers Await News After Ski Resort Fire
The families of teens missing after a tragic inferno at a venue in a Swiss alpine town are facing an excruciating period of uncertainty for answers and requesting clues about their family members publicly.
The fire devastated the Le Constellation bar in Cans-Montana, located in the mountains of the Valais region, in the middle of the night of January 1st. Confirmed video depict the roof structure catching alight as bottles with fireworks are raised in celebration.
Emergency services have warned that it could take an extended period to identify the victims of the disaster, which resulted in the death of numerous partygoers and injured another 119. Authorities noted on the latest update that the majority of the injured have been accounted for, with efforts still underway to locate the other six.
In the meantime, relatives have been taking to social media to appeal for clues about their friends who were at the bar that fateful night.
Desperate Searches for the Unaccounted For
The fate of Swiss national Arthur Brodard, 16, are still unconfirmed, according to an public plea from his mother.
The who lives of Lutry near the city, explained to a local newspaper that she had gone back to the city to see if he was in the medical facility, while his other parent did the equivalent search in Bern, but could not find him.
"It feels like a terrible dream, a horror. Either I find my son in the hospital mortuary, or I find him in critical condition. Words cannot describe it," she stated.
She continued that some of his friends had been discovered with burns covering nearly half their bodies. "It's unspeakable; they endured a terrifying ordeal."
The Italian government has confirmed that a number of of its nationals have not been located.
Among them is Emanuele Galeppini, a 16-year-old promising athlete, originally from Genoa but now residing in Dubai.
The national sporting body has said that he is dead, without mentioning the fire, paying tribute to a "young athlete who carried with him dedication and true sportsmanship."
His parent, is quoted as saying that his son was at the bar and was last heard from around midnight. An official spokesperson has indicated that a formal confirmation of his death is awaited.
Further Cases
Giovanni Tamburi, sixteen, is likewise among the missing. His parent said that he had been on vacation but had ventured out with friends and found himself at the venue.
"A companion told me they fled after the fire started and that he had his mobile with him, but then at a certain point he lost sight of him," she recounted, adding he had been wearing a distinctive piece of jewelry.
One of his teachers said, "I remember his kindness and positive demeanor, combined with great responsibility. Often offer to help out."
Alice Kallergis, who holds dual Swiss and Greek citizenship but lives full-time in the country, was also at the bar on that night, according to media.
Her sibling has posted an urgent request on social media, saying the family has had "no information" regarding the teenager or the three friends she was with, who are also unaccounted for.
Officials from her other nation say they are closely watching the situation.
