Harvard ex-president Summers Leaves from OpenAI Board
One-time economic leader Lawrence Summers is exiting the board at the ChatGPT creator, just several days after a batch of digital correspondence between him and deceased financier the accused trafficker became publicly available.
Summers commented in an announcement that he was "appreciative for the privilege to have participated, excited about the prospects of the enterprise, and look forward tracking their advancement".
Summers, who formerly headed the prestigious university, announced on recently that he would be stepping back from public roles due to his connections with the convicted sex offender.
Email Communications
The recently released emails showed that the economist corresponded with the financier until the day before Epstein's 2019 detention for suspected human trafficking of underage individuals.
In a separate statement, the AI firm stated it respected the economist's choice to depart.
"We appreciate his many contributions and the insight he provided to the directors," the company stated.
Legislative Background
This development comes after both chambers of Congress decided on Tuesday to pass a bill that would require the federal prosecutors to make public its documents on Jeffrey Epstein.
The bill will subsequently move to the desk of the White House for signature. The President has indicated he intends to approve the bill, after changing his position on the issue following pressure from his supporters.
Email Contents
A group of Epstein-connected emails disclosed by the House Oversight Committee recently included numerous well-known personalities in the billionaire's previous network, without suggesting any criminal activity by those figures.
The communications showed that the economist and the financier often met for meals, with the billionaire often seeking to connect Summers to influential global figures.
Individual Statement
After the messages were made available with the public, Summers expressed he accepted "total ownership for my misguided judgment to continue interacting with the financier".
He added that he hoped "to reestablish faith and repair bonds with the people nearest to me".
Previous Positions
The professor occupied high-level positions under Democratic administrations; serving as treasury secretary under President Clinton, and as director of the economic advisory body under President Obama.
He led the university from 2001 to 2006 and remains a faculty member there. When announcing his departure from public duties previously on this week, he stated he would continue his academic responsibilities.
Other Impacts
Following his declaration on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a liberal policy institute in the capital where he was a researcher, verified that the economist was not connected with the institution.
Summers joined the leadership of the AI company, which creates the language model, in 2023 - following a unsuccessful effort to remove its chief executive OpenAI's head.
